About MPO Connectors
Multi-fiber push on connectors, or MPOs for short, are fiber connectors incorporating multiple optical fibers. These connectors are found primarily in data center environments for consolidating multiple fibers in backbone cabling and supporting parallel optics applications that transmit and receive signals over multiple fibers to achieve higher speeds.
MPO connectors feature a linear array of fibers in a single ferrule. They are defined as an array connector with more than 2 fibers; they are available with 8, 12, 16, or 24 fibers for common data center applications. MPO connectors come in male (with pins) and female (without pins) for proper mating to avoid damaging the fibers.
About Single-Mode And Multi-Mode Fibers
Fiber optic cabling comes in two types – multi-mode and single-mode. Multimode cabling distances are shorter than singlemode, and singlemode is therefore deployed for outside plant long-haul fiber applications, while multimode is the primary choice for data centers and premise applications. Singlemode cable is almost always yellow, while multimode is typically aqua.
In addition, single-mode fiber has a small core that is typically 9µm wide, and a cladding diameter of 125 µm. Single-mode fiber allows for only one type of light mode to be propagated through the fiber. The transmission is therefore laser-focused and efficient, resulting in minimal signal loss and allowing for high-bandwidth applications over long distances. SM fiber is ideal for higher performance, longer distances and data centers where the higher cost of supporting electronics is not an issue.
