Fluke Networks SMC-9-SCE2KAPC Singlemode OTDR Launch Cable

The Fluke Networks SMC-9-SCE2KAPC Singlemode Launch Cable is a compact, rugged OTDR launch cord designed for accurate fiber optic testing with the OptiFiber Pro OTDR. Unlike traditional bulky launch reels, this 160-meter singlemode launch cable is housed in a durable zippered case that allows technicians to use only the amount of fiber needed, keeping worksites organized and improving portability.

Constructed with reference-grade singlemode fiber E2000 APC connector and UPC connector, this launch cable helps to deliver precise insertion loss and reflectance readings. It is ideal for testing OS1 and OS2 fiber networks, and other applications requiring low return loss performance.

Features

  • 160 m singlemode OTDR launch cable
  • E2000 APC connector to SC UPC connector
  • E2000 connector offers Active Core Alignment (ACA) process and bi-component ferrule
  • SC connector with square shape, snap-in design and spring-loaded ferrule
  • APC 8° polished green connector for superior return loss performance
  • UPC ultra smooth surface endface with a blue connector color
  • Singlemode 9/125 µm fiber construction
  • Designed for use with Fluke Networks OptiFiber Pro OTDR
  • Compatible with OS1 and OS2 fiber testing
  • Rugged zippered deployment case for convenient cable management

Benefits

  • Optimized for testing E2000 APC and SC UPC fiber connections with the OptiFiber Pro OTDR
  • Supports OptiFiber Pro modules featuring SmartLoop technology
  • E2000 connectors include automatic spring-loaded metal shutters to protect against dust contamination and improve laser safety
  • Reference-grade fiber and connectors reduce measurement uncertainty and improve OTDR test accuracy
  • When used in sets of three (launch, loopback, receive), the cables support SmartLoop testing to TIA-568.3-D standards. SmartLoop technology test two fibers in one tests while providing individual pass, fail and bi-directionally averaged results (See Versiv Manual pdf)
  • Allows OTDRs to accurately measure the insertion loss and reflectance of the first and last connections in a fiber link
  • Compatible with the Fluke Networks T-Pak Magnetic Meter Hanger (sold separately) for convenient hands-free deployment

Singlemode 9/125 µm Fiber

Fiber optic strands consist of a core, a layer of cladding, and an outer coating often called the buffer. The SMC9-E2KAPC/E2KAPC utilizes 9/125 µm singlemode fiber, which supports the transmission of a single light path for highly efficient signal propagation over long distances. Singlemode fiber delivers lower attenuation and higher bandwidth capabilities than multimode fiber, making it the preferred choice for telecommunications networks, campus backbones, and data center interconnects.

SC - Common 2.5mm Connector

The SC (Subscriber Connector or Standard Connector) uses a 2.5 mm ferrule and is easily recognized by its square shape. It features a snap-in design that mates using a push-pull action with a spring-loaded ferrule and is widely used for its low insertion loss and easy deployment.

UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) Connector Polish

UPC connectors use a highly polished and rounded end face giving greater contact between the glass surfaces. This in turn reduces the amount of light reflected back.

E2000 Connectors

The E2000 (E2K) connector is known for its single-channel, push-pull design, high-performance optical characteristics and integrated protective shutter, which automatically shields the ferrule from dust and contamination. Its precision ferrule design ensures reliable, low-loss connectivity in demanding network environments.

APC 8° Polish for Low Reflectance

The Angled Physical Contact (APC) connector finish incorporates an 8-degree polished end face that redirects reflected light into the fiber cladding rather than back toward the source. This significantly reduces back reflection and improves return loss performance.

Why Use an OTDR Launch Cable?

An OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) launch cable creates the necessary distance between the OTDR and the fiber link under test, allowing the instrument to accurately characterize the first and last connector events. This enables more reliable measurement of insertion loss, reflectance, splices, connectors, and other fiber impairments that may otherwise fall within the OTDR dead zone.
